The Acropolis is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Athens.
It’s iconic, historic, and absolutely breathtaking. I made it my first stop, just like most travelers do. A little tip: if you’re visiting in the low season, tickets are half the price compared to high season.

Explore Athens Central Market

Just a short walk from the Acropolis lies a more local treasure: the Varvakios Central Municipal Market, also known as Athens Central Market. It takes about 30 minutes to get there on foot, and once you arrive, you’ll find the place buzzing with life.

There’s everything from fresh meats (yes, heads and feet included!) to fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and fragrant spices. Right nearby is the Athens Flea Market, a great place to wander and soak in the local atmosphere.

Hidden Gem: Tis Theatrou to Steki

While exploring the Central Market, I stumbled upon a delightful restaurant just nearby : Tis Theatrou to Steki. It's a casual, no-frills spot that serves authentic Greek tapas dishes in small portions perfect for sharing. The food is fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly affordable.

You can expect Greek salad, meatballs, zucchini balls with feta cream, fried calamari, fried anchovies, and other simple, traditional dishes made with care. The atmosphere is warm and lively. One afternoon, as I enjoyed my lunch, a group of musicians strolled between the tables, playing guitars and singing Greek folk songs. One slightly tipsy customer even began dancing along. It was one of those moments that reminded me of the beauty of simple pleasures: sunshine, good food, and a sense of community.

The restaurant is popular among locals and tourists alike, often visited by tour groups for a taste of real Greek cuisine. They’re open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, except on Sundays when they’re closed. If you're in the area, don’t miss it.

Where to Stay Near the Acropolis

During my time in Athens, I stayed at the Acropolis Hill Hotel, a peaceful retreat tucked away just a short walk from the Acropolis and the Philopappos Hill Viewpoint, where you get a stunning panoramic view of the city and the Acropolis from the opposite side. The hotel is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, offering a peaceful retreat after a day of sightseeing.

From the hotel, it's about a 25-minute walk to the restaurant, making it a convenient lunch destination. Since the restaurant closes early, I often picked up dinner to go and enjoyed it back at my hotel.

The Acropolis Hill Hotel is a solid choice for travelers who appreciate a calm atmosphere but still want to stay near all the main attractions.

Whether you're visiting the Acropolis or exploring Athens' hidden corners, don’t miss the chance to experience real Greek flavors and warm hospitality. Tis Theatrou to Steki offers a taste of local life that’s as memorable as any ancient ruin.

If you're exploring the Central Market, come with an appetite. This little spot might just become the highlight of your day, leaving you full, smiling, and completely charmed by Athens.
